Scandal?  You bet!  And you may be the perpetrator!  Yeah, you!

By now, you’ve likely heard all about Earth Hour, whether in the news, your employer, or your friends, most of us have an idea of what it is about.  (If you don’t know, it’s one hour of turning off your lights on March 28 starting at 8:30 p.m. your local time).

What’s the scandal?

But there is a dark (or should I say, “light”?) secret some of us are hiding.  Despite hearing about this worldwide movement in an effort to show the talking heads, pundits, politicians, and moneyed interests that the population of the world at-large is ready for a change, some of us will not even make an attempt to participate.  Some of us who really care will still not join in.  Sound like you?

An hour!  C’mon, sit this one out — light a candle, have fun with friends, take that hour to discuss with loved ones the environment — all while in the dark!

Don’t be that perpetrator!

Am I trying to guilt you into joining this movement?  Yes!  We’re all, “guilty,” of polluting — but this is a chance to join a huge vote for big changes in policy that ultimately could benefit us all!  So join in!  I assume that because you’re reading this, you already care about the environment, so what’s holding you back?

We’re turning out our lights on March 28, trying to get 1 billion people to vote with their light switches in favor of the Earth and against global warming.

Irena, over at Sprout Chicago recently told me that she and her boyfriend will have, “off-the-grid Mondays,” during which they don’t use the lights, the television, their computers, or other electrical devices.

(I’m paraphrasing here:) She shared that beyond it being environmental, she finds that they enjoy the time more — telling stories and cooking by candlelight makes one more aware of himself or herself and the others with whom they share the time — with fewer distractions.

We’re not asking for you to commit a night each week; but once this year, turn those lights out for one hour along with everyone else.  You might find yourself much more conscious of yourself and others, as well as your direct relationship to the environment in which we all live.

If you want more information, I will direct you to the Earth Hour websiteBut don’t find yourself being a party to the Earth Hour 2009 Scandal!
