Earth Day 2009 | Earthascope

Earth Day is here!  We haven’t talked about Earth Day this year on Earthascope and originally, I was hesitant to do so.  At first, I thought that everyday should be considered in some manner to be its own, “Earth Day,” and there isn’t much of a reason to make a big deal about this one day any more than we should discuss or focus on the environment the rest of the time.  I actually considered ignoring this day’s distinction.

But at second thought, I decided that I should use this day to help raise these issues into others’ consciousness.  After all, not everyone is at that point in their life where they feel committed everyday to living greener.  Flooding the internet with new, “green articles,” focusing on the environment, coupled with people reading and discussing all while focusing one day on the subject of sustainability might actually make a difference in some people’s lives.

Living a greener lifestyle is not at the forefront of all of our minds.  In the most basic sense, we all are at different points on our separate paths of life, having each attained different levels of and commitments to sustainability.  But raising the issues and showing how there can be hope for solutions can indeed help others to stay engaged on an ongoing basis — which is key to solving the crises our environment faces.

Sure, naming a day, “Earth Day,” does not do much for any of us without any meaningful actions that follow.  But if and when the postive actions we seek do follow, that is, if we can use this day during which the stature of these pressing issues are raised even higher, the day will have served its purpose.

So you can expect for us to focus this Earth Day and the days that follow on some of the issues we face.  Some of the tough issues which require our attention will be highlighted while also showing some of the potential solutions which offer us some hope.

Remember, words influence others, and I hope you will take that which you read about here and on other blogs and news sites and raise others’ awareness through meaningful discussion (ideally followed by meaningful action).
